Operation Gothic Serpent was a U.S. military mission in Somalia in 1993, conducted primarily by elite special operations forces like the Army Rangers and Delta Force. Its main objective was to capture Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid, whose militia had been attacking U.N. peacekeepers. The operation culminated in the Battle of Mogadishu on October 3–4, 1993, when U.S. forces were caught in a prolonged firefight after two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down. The battle resulted in 18 American and hundreds of Somali deaths, drawing global attention and ultimately leading to the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Somalia.
